‘How much is that doggie in the window?” A lot of us maybe familiar with that popular song sung by Patti Page back in the fifties. Many more may be familiar with the actual experience of buying that adorable puppy at the store. But how many of us know the real story of how that little puppy got to be that 'doggie in the window'? The real story is one that will shock many a reader. My story begins with Puppy Mills. 90 percent of puppies in pet stores come from puppy mills. (1) Puppy mills are large-scale commercial dog breeding operations where profit is placed above the well-being of the animals. Dogs are forced to breed over and over again in overcrowded and unsanitary cages without sufficient food, water, grooming, socialization, or veterinary care. As a result these poor animals suffer from a host of physical, emotional and social disorders. Puppy mills are a widespread problem with the ASPCA estimating over 10,000 puppy mills in the U.S alone.(2) Puppy mills contribute to pet overpopulation and cause countless dogs lifetimes of suffering. These animals need our help! They count on you and me for survival. Click on the button to see how you can be a super hero! References 1. PAWS 2. ASPCA |
